The rest of this year is shaping up to be a pretty awesome time and a few things have happened in the last couple of weeks that are real confirmation to me that I’m on the right track and that my belief in what I’m doing is not unfounded and is not going unnoticed.
I’ve been awarded a 12 month music industry scholarship award by the Alex Legg Memorial Foundation, which is a small trust left by the incredible musician and mentor to so many musicians, Alex Legg, when he past away last year from cancer. The fund was entrusted to his close community of musicians and industry savvy associates to assist emerging artist to break through the glass ceiling and develop into established and recognised artists in Australian.
I’m really truly honoured to be the inaugural recipient of this award and the benefactor of so much mentorship and assistance for the projects I have planned for the coming year.
The first opportunity I have been offered by the scholarship is to share the stage with two hugely inspirational musicians, Jeff Lang & Lloyd Spiegel on Dec 6 at the Burrinja Blues Club for the public announcement of the scholarship and the first year anniversary of Alex’s passing. I’m so stoked about that….and a little nervous I must admit.
We’ve also got the support slot with the Bon Scotts coming up this weekend as well as two shows at the Bendigo Blues & Roots Festival…that’s going to be MAD actually. On Sunday we play from 1:15 – 2:15 in Bendigo then jump straight off stage, pack our gear in the vans, and drive 3 hours to Geelong to set up again to play at 6:30 as opening act for the Bon Scotts. I love my life! 🙂
My bass player, Craig, has really put his substantial industry knowledge and connections to work for me now too and is helping me to manage the band and create a vision with me, which is something I find hard to find the words to describe how much it means to me.
Suddenly I feel like I have an ally within the band who, not only is a great musician, but who is thinking about the big picture with me and helping to hold that vision. He is a very wise person and has a fantastic tempering quality to my more impulsive and highly driven personality. I think we are going to make a very productive team.
The band is now planning to record a new album in the early months of 2016 and so we are in the “gathering of songs” and “find the right producer” stages.
I actually really love this stage of the record making process. It’s when you get to sit back and imagine what kind of record you want to make, decide on the sound or direction and then start working towards bringing that vision into reality. Very alchemical.
We have so many new songs (I wrote three more this weekend) and some we are playing live already to enthusiastic responses from the audience…so that’s a good sign.
Don’t forget to get your tickets for the video launch if you are geographically positioned to be able to attend. Otherwise keep your eye out for the release on YouTube in the following days.
